The loss of the 300-horsepower S60 R means that just two power options are available on Volvo's entry-level sedan for 2008. The base 2.5T relies on a low-boost, turbocharged 208-horsepower 2.5L inline five-cylinder to drive its front wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5R AWD uses the same setup to power all four wheels, accompanied by Volvo's Instant Traction delivery system. The S60 T5 derives its power from a high-boost, 257-horsepower turbocharged 2.4L I5 that delivers 258 lb-ft of torque. It is available in front-wheel drive only and comes standard with Volvo's five-speed Geartronic transmission with manual shift mode.
Every S60 comes nicely appointed with standard features. These include remote central locking, an anti-theft system, four years of Volvo Roadside Assistance, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with cruise and audio controls, one-touch power windows, power heated mirrors, electrically foldable rear head restraints, and an ambient temperature gauge. All driver's seats are power adjustable with memory, and rear seats are split-folding. Climate control is all electronic and includes a cabin filter, and all cars feature a performance audio system with in-dash CD player and MP3/WMA functionality. Both 2.5T models ride on 16-inch alloy wheels.
Optional on all 2.5T and 2.5T AWD models is the five-speed Geartronic, Homelink, a power adjustable passenger seat, leather seating and interior touches, a power sunroof, and several different styles of 16-, 17-, and 18-inch alloy wheels.
The top-line S60 T5 comes standard with the Homelink remote garage door opener, sport leather seating, steering wheel, and shift knob, mesh aluminum inlays, watch dial instruments, Sirius satellite radio preparation, 17-inch Cassiopeia Titanium Diamond wheels, and a power glass sunroof. Active bi-xenon headlights are optional on this car, as well as the 2.5T AWD.
All 2008 Volvo S60 models can be ordered with a trunk spoiler, headlight washers, front and rear parking assist, a rain sensor, heated front seats, high-performance audio, and an Interior Air Quality System (IAQS). Popular packages range from $675 to $2,120 and can incorporate several standalone options, as well as Volvo's DVD-based navigation.
Standard safety features on all 2008 Volvo S60s include daytime running lights, tire pressure monitor, Dynamic Stability anti-skid system, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with hydraulic assist, and front and rear fog lamps. Inside, there are dual-stage front air bags, front side-impact bags, side curtain air bags, and Volvo's Whiplash Protection System.

For 2008, the high-performance Volvo S60 R has been discontinued, leaving the T5 as the top-of-the-line model, which this year is available only with a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. It now comes standard with leather seating, power sunroof, rearview mirror compass, satellite radio capability, and 17-inch Cassiopeia wheels. All trim levels--2.5T, 2.5T AWD, T5--offer new option packages that include premium sound systems.
The 2008 S60 is Volvo's entry into a highly competitive European midsize sedan market that includes Audi's A4, BMW's 3-Series, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The design has been around since 2000, but Volvo has done much to keep it fresh, including an exterior styling update in 2007. With competitive pricing, ample standard equipment, premium options, and plenty of performance from either of its turbocharged engines, the Volvo S60 represents a safe, smart, distinctive alternative to any other midsize sedan on the road.
